If you’re wondering which shows to catch this May as part of Brighton Fringe, Stemme thoroughly recommends grabbing tickets for a truly original show: Annabelszki: The Professional Breakup Artist.
There’s a multitude of events to choose from this year, and it’s so refreshing to see more and more lesbian stand-up comedy appearing in our city, a scene which has been relatively quiet. Support is growing and the future is looking bright for this trend to continue, pioneered by hilarious women such as Hove based Zoe Lyons.
Whether you live in the area yourself or are visiting for Brighton Festival or Brighton Fringe, you’d be a fool (in or out of love) to miss this romantically themed, lively show.
A fellow resident of Brighton herself, Annabelszki takes us on an amazing journey through the highs and lows of the game we like to call dating. Annabelszki (artist, feminist, lesbian and self-confessed professional breakup artist) performs at Sweet Werks 2, Middle Street from Fri 25 – Sun 27 May.
I caught the preview show, upstairs at The Quadrant a couple of weeks ago, and found myself chuckling away at a one-woman show more poetic than I was expecting! From the hunt for the woman of your dreams to the awkward breakups, and everything in between, Annabelszki covers the whole world of lesbian dating.
If the preview is anything to go by, there’s certainly something for everyone during this shocking and unmissable performance!
As someone very happy in my own relationship, it didn’t stop me from finding Annabelski’s stories hilarious, including the trials and tribulations of online dating as a lesbian.
I certainly wasn’t the only one enjoying the showing, there were fits of laughter throughout the audience. Some stories truly shocked me, others I could totally relate to – both had my cheeks aching from smiling so much!
The show was entertainingly punctuated with audience interaction, projected video anecdotes from friends, musical interludes and even props! I won’t ruin the surprise, but I was in shock when Annabel pulled a particularly raunchy item from under my girlfriend’s seat! Every performance will be different, as Annabelszki asks willing audience members for assistance with forming a passionate spoken word piece. It’s a highly entertaining take on improvised comedy.
For the broken-hearted among you, find comfort in knowing you’re not the only to have had your dreams shattered. If you’re ready to yet again partake in the hunt for love, remember your next partner may even be in the audience at this show…
Professional Breakup Artist toured successfully in 2017, including performances at Women in Comedy Festival (Manchester), LFest and Lesbian Lives Conference (Brighton University). 2018 dates include the International Gay Theatre Festival Dublin (IGTFD) and the Edinburgh Fringe.
